Las Vegas is an extravagant place to visit, incomparable to any other city that has travel amenities to fit the needs of all different types of people. There is nowhere else people can find luxurious casino hotels, fine dining, wonderful live entertainment and state-of-the art convention or trade show facilities. Las Vegas relies on tourism to help drive the local economy by offering top quality entertainment, including headliner shows, concerts, attractions, shopping and world-renowned resorts.

There is some good news for Las Vegas with visitor volume increasing 4.3 percent in September, the first year-over-year monthly increase since May 2008. More than 3 million people came to Las Vegas in the month, compared with 2.9 million in the same month a year ago. Also contributing to the increase is convention attendance being up 12.2 percent, even though there were 95 fewer conventions held in Las Vegas during the month, compared to September 2008. This is a good sign for Las Vegas who relies greatly on discretionary consumer spending.

Las Vegas Strip gambling winnings continued to fall in September making it the 21st straight month. However, Nevada officials saw some positives in the revenue figures with the smallest decline since June 2008. The state Gaming Control Board reported that Strip casinos won $506.3 million, down 3.5 percent from the same month of 2008. Statewide, casinos won $911.1 million, a decrease of 8.9 percent.

The performance in the gaming industry reflects the national, global and state’s economic troubles. It was the also the 21st consecutive month of a drop in gross win for the 252 casinos. However, on the Strip there were increased winnings in craps, roulette and baccarat and in sports betting. This is mainly because September was the first full month of betting on college and NFL football this season.
